Charging stations every 100 kilometers
European Union action on climate goals has accelerated. As we know, as part of the #FitFor55 package, #EU countries are to reduce GHG gas emissions by 55% by 2030 which, of course, includes truck transport.
Now the European Parliament has adopted a position on vehicle charging stations. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA), this is a step in the right direction, but before we get to that, let’s mention the content of the European Parliament’s position. The Euro-parliamentarians want charging stations for vans to be spaced every 60 kilometers and trucks every 100 kilometers.
Hydrogen fuelling stations are also to be located at least every 100 kilometers. By 2024, #EU member states are to inform the parliament how they want to achieve these goals.
As #ACEA Director General Sigrid de Vries points out, the number of charging stations adopted by parliament in the law is the absolute minimum, the needs are much bigger.
Private investment is also needed, which should be guaranteed by the European Commission. According to #ACEA‘s calculations, the capacity of vehicle charging stations should reach by #2030. 6,500 kW, while the European Commission assumes only 3,500 kW.
The location of the charging stations also remains an open question, as tens of thousands of parking spaces for trucks would have to be added. Meanwhile, there is a shortage of truck parking in Europe.
